Volume 38 IndieSpensable Review

Remember my "I Wish Wednesday" about IndieSpensable? A indie book combo subscription that completely rocks? Well, I caved and got it. I obviously haven't read the book yet but couldn't wait to post my first Volume! Volume 38 HAS sold out but sign up for the next one to get started!

Check out my current Giveaway!

Type: Print/Indie Box
Cost: $39.95/shipment includes shipping (add $12 if outside the US)
What is it?:  From website: "Powell's subscription club delivers the best new books, with special attention to independent publishers. Signed first editions. Inventive, original sets. Exclusive printings.... Every six weeks, another installment to read and admire." Not only do you get a first edition of a great book that is signed but other surprises and gifts are included as well as interviews and Q&As with the author. Past books include Freedom, The Marriage Plot, and The Night Circus.

Can I just say how excited I was to get this box? Any other book lovers out there?!?!?

Customer Service side note: Holy begeebus, their customer service is amazing! I had a double billing on my account, called them up and the guy was sooo nice and friendly, "You're in Dallas- Mmm I had amazing BBQ there." He immediately found the error and what do you know, it was a glitch in accounting that was automatically fixed but just hadn't corrected itself in my bank account. Sometimes if your "problem" isn't actually a problem or has already been resolved the customer service people can make you feel stupid- not at Powell's! He still apologized over and over again and kept saying how he glad he was that I called and made sure everything was ok even though everything had already been fixed. A+++ in Customer Service. I've wish I lived in Portland and got to experience Powell's in person!!

Ta-da! Haha, I love unboxings that are anti-climatic!

There ya go! IndieSpensable tells you what book you get in the Volume but none of the other tidbits, so this was a surprise box!

Plastic wrapping no more! I hate my cruddy pictures (I should be back to my better pics soon!) but everything is so clean and pretty.

Marushka Chocolates: I was so excited to see some local Portland goodies! These chocolates were beautiful and how fun do they sound!??! Plus, you always get me with caramel! So, how did they taste?!?! I don't know. In my migraine-induced haze I left these on the table while I showered and our puppy ATE them. Super scary but luckily at around 1 oz (not including the caramel parts) he didn't get too much chocolate poisoning. Suffice to say we were some super scared parents but he is totally fine now. Anyway, I am considering ordering some myself off their website so I can have the IndieSpensable experience.

Decomposition Book Under the Sea: This adorable notebook themed "under the sea" is made with 100% post-consumer waste recycled pages! Awesome! I just ordered some lined notebooks from TheFancy since I love to have these around! I love notebooks like these to throw in my purse/car or have on my desk to make lists and such! Plus this one is super cute and recycled- double score.

Volume 38 Booklet: This is an indeSpensable exclusive! It's the equivalent of an info card, extra, and more packed into one.

Here'es some info about how everything wraps together in this box package!

Facts about Domenica Ruta!

Interview session about the book and author- so cool to bring everything together!

With of Without You: The BOOK! I am a huge book lover/reader! I am a fast reader and love to fly through books (especially easy YA reads) or sit around with some honker of a read. I read everything and am game to read any genre which is why IndieSpensable especially sounded amazing! Give me a variety! So what is this book?!? Here's Powell's description:

"Growing up in an Italian-American family in Danvers, Massachusetts, Domenica Ruta had a life filled with violence and poverty but also imagination and love. Ruta's mother, Kathi, who "believed it was more important to be an interesting person than it was to be a good one," cycled between welfare and great wealth, helped get her daughter into a prestigious boarding school, and gave her Oxycontin. In gorgeous, inventive prose, Ruta chronicles her coming of age, relationships, and struggles to define herself outside of her family. Darkly funny and painfully honest, With or Without You is an essential, necessary work."

Ok, this book sounds amazing! I love a haunting memoir- who doesn't? (Need some recs- I have tons!) This book sounds intense and a can't put down read!

This is a custom slipcase that is exclusive to IndieSpensable customers! I can't help it, I love pretty things aka I love this.

What's that? Oh yeah, my book is signed- boom- IndieSpensable exclusive!

Verdict: I know this may look pricey but it is actually comparable to a lot of subs like Fancy etc. Plus, you are getting things that NO ONE else gets! So many exclusives! And it's a book- and books are awesome. Fyi I do own a Kindle but I'd say I split my reading time between e-books and printed books- nothing beats the feel of a real book! The chocolates and notebook are about $12 and a collectible version of the book is $34.50! I actually found the first edition, collectible version signed listed at $85!!! So yes, this deal is a steal! I am so excited to dig into this service and I am keeping this subscription for the next Volume too! Wonder what it's gonna be?...

  1. Wow, what a fun subscription, the chocolates look divine, your dog must know good quality ;)
I also am always with a notebook, wherever I go I have at least one notebook with me and two books to read, if I get in situations where I have nothing to do (waiting for a doctors appointment, between classes at school etc.) People think I'm a freak but reading is so important and gives you so much joy!
