Ipsy February Review

Woohoo- I got my Ipsy "box" in the mail today- my first actual beauty box unboxing on my beauty blog (B+ for alliteration skills there)!

*Ipsy:
Type: Beauty Box
Cost: $10/month includes shipping
What is it?: Created by some of the top beauty bloggers/youtubers around, Ipsy subscribers receive a Glam Bag (a cute makeup bag) monthly with deluxe samples and full-size make-up products (usually 5-7 products). Ipsy sends out the same bag to everyone every month with some small differences usually based off of the Beauty Quiz you take when you sign up. Ipsy gives you a forum to load videos and pictures featuring looks made with your Glam Bag. Unfortunately, there is no room right now for new subscribers. I'll post when there is availability again but get on a waitlist on their site.

Ipsy is unique that this this box isn't actually a box (one of a few that don't actually send a box). I do love the giant shiny pink envelope PLUS this doesn't add to the giant tower of boxes in our recycling bin. And hey, it's fun to get something bright pink- brings out the girly side in you.

I know, I know, what an awful picture! But have you ever tried to take a pic of a shiny patent black bag? It's hard! Anyway, every month Ipsy doesn't just send out beauty samples, they also send a cute bag along with it. And by along with the samples, I mean it comes with all the samples inside! I have subscribed to Ipsy for I think 4 months now (this is the 4th) and at first I was meh about the bags but turns out they come in handy. I grab one of these suckers and put bobby pins and lipstick for my weekday outreach shows and use them EVERY time I pack for a trip. Turns out you can never have enough tiny bags. I don't love the design of this but I think that is just because there were rumors of a sparkly V-day bag. This is the second of my bags from them with a surprise inside look- I like the red peek-a-boo! Price: $2?

Check out my samples! This month's theme is "Get Red Carpet Ready!" This is perfect for Feb and they obviously chose it because of the onslaught of Red-Carpet awards shows! Grammys, Oscars, you get the deal. *I didn't take a pic of the info card because it is actually just a card with discounts for the full-size products- plus mine was a bit bent up.

1. Pixi Flawless & Poreless primer

Ok usually I don't get stoked for face primers since I LOVE my primer already (BareMinerals btw) but when I read Pore-minimizing I though alright then! Everyone wants smaller pores so might as well give it a go! It is also supposed to hydrate as it cleans out your pores. Plus, it is semi-pricey and I love trying things that make me feel like I am rich and fancy. Price: $14.50

2. MicaBeauty Gel Eyeliner in Black

Ok confession time: I have never tried a gel eyeliner pot before! I have a stila smudge pot (in kitten) but I bought it to be used as an eyeshadow (which the pots are also for) and never as a liner! I am addicted to my Stila Smudge Stick Eyeliner and rarely veer away from it. However, I will take out my liner brush (which is new and unused!) and give this a try! This is a full-size pot btw! Price: $30

3. Coastal Scents Eyeshow Set - "In the Spotlight"

There were two sets set out and while I would have liked the smokey set I will use some of these colors. I hate the yellow but the top left one- Dark Goldenrod- reminds me a bit of Urban Decay's Half Baked which I love and the bottom left looks fun too. I think Ipsy has sent out these quads before but I'm sure not complaining about them! I love that we get to sample 4 shadows at once! Price: $3.06

4. The Lash Card by Lash Card

I was so excited to see this! I know some people don't like getting "tools" in sample bags/boxes but I have always wanted to try a mascara shield and for some reason never got myself one! For shows/performing (and big nights out) I could definitely see myself using these! Trust me, the last thing you want before going in for an audition is a mascara smudge on your face! Anyway, this is an Ipsy exclusive with 4 lash cards inside, and each card is two-sided. Even though these are disposables, I could see using one forever so 4 should last a long, long time. Price: $2.80

5. POP's Smokey Lash Kapow Mascara

At first when I heard this was gonna be in this month's Ipsy bag, I was not excited. It's not because of the brand or anything, I just have a LOT of mascara samples... Then the more I thought about it, I realized two of my fav mascaras in my rotation I received as samples from beauty boxes including Benefit's They're Real Mascara which I got from Ipsy in November 2012. This mascara claims to curl your lashes up while adding volume so I'll give it a go! I put it on my lashes and it looked great but it was on top of my already put-on mascara. I'll try it out for realsies and post a review when I do this month's Birchbox/Ipsy match-up. Price: $10.80

Verdict: So there is a very large chance I did some math wrong (it's been a long day) but my calculation is $63.16 in value! Considering I spent $10, I would say that is worth it! This month I wasn't really familiar with any of the brands (I had heard of pixi) which is one of my favorite reasons to get subscription boxes- discovering new brands and products! I'm excited about the eye focus of this month and am especially intrigued to give the eye liner a go. I am definitely a satisfied Ipsy customer this month!

  1. Loved ipsy!!
I saw a lot of complaints because the items werent full sized (and cant tell on the eyeliner) but they are expensive regardless! It was definitely a good bag, in my opinion!!

    1. Some people don't realize sub boxes are for samples- and only some provide full-size. Too bad in my opinion. I originally put the eyeliner as full size though stated I couldn't find the size anywhere but changed it when I found a posting on the ipsy page that it was full-size! Woot!

  2. I'm excited to get my Ipsy bag! Hopefully I'll be off the waitlist soon.

Just an FYI on the Small Things Blog, she recently did a tutorial on the gel eyeliner with a hint to first draw your line with a pencil and then go over it with the gel and brush for a more dramatic look. Very helpful, I thought. :)

    1. Hmm- good to know!

I recently saw some people on a forum get off the waitlist so it looks like more subscriptions opened up so fingers crossed.

  4. I got the same colors and I'm in love. Wore it out last night its amazing. I used the yellow as a highlight and it was perfect. The gel liner is neat too I usually use a dark shadow as eyeliner with a brush and have for years this is a nice step up from that for me.
