Volume 41 IndieSpensable Review

Somehow, this IndieSpensable shipment completely snuck up on me! I'm sad to say I haven't gotten to the books from the last shipment yet! Boo! No matter, I'll get to them. Anyway, let's take a look at this amazing Book Subscription box from Powell's!

IndieSpensable:
Type: Print/Indie Box
Cost: $39.95/shipment includes shipping (add $12 if outside the US)
What is it?:  From website: "Powell's subscription club delivers the best new books, with special attention to independent publishers. Signed first editions. Inventive, original sets. Exclusive printings.... Every six weeks, another installment to read and admire." Not only do you get a first edition of a great book that is signed but other surprises and gifts are included as well as interviews and Q&As with the author. Past books include Freedom, The Marriage Plot, and The Night Circus.

The box

First look!

REAL first look- nummies!

Steven Smith Teamaker- No. 46 Exceptional Iced Tea: The team at Powells/IndieSpensable says that reading is thirsty work so they included this bag for 6 quarts of premium iced tea from a local Portland artisan teamaker! Sounds awesome. Haven't tried it yet (just got the box) but we are in full iced tea mode and I literally just finished a glass a minute ago- soo looking forward to this blend of North Indian and Ceylon full leaf teas!

Elephant's Delicatessen- Shortbread Cookie: How cute is this? To go with my tea, IndieSpensable included another of Portland's favorite place's treat! Apparently this deli partnered with IndieSpensable on their very first volume AND here they go again. Super cute. My jaw still hurts (wisdom teeth extraction) so I only got one bite and CJ devoured the rest! Super yummy though- just what a shortbread cookie should taste like!

Collectible Brewster Booklet: One of my fav parts about this sub is this exclusive booklet. It gives you facts on the author, an exclusive Q & A, and info about why/how the box's items were chosen. I usually read the box info and save the rest for after I read the book. That's just my style.

Hardcover in different lighting so you can see the velvety finish.

Brewster by Mark Slouka- Signed in Custom Slipcase: I read up on this book when they announced it was this volume's feature and it looks gooood! Crazy good reviews and an intriguing coming-of-age story set in the late '60s! I think this is my next book to read (I'm finishing up one right now). I'm already interested in his first novel (God's Fool) and I haven't even started this one yet! Excited.

Verdict: I don't price IndieSpensable anymore since the exclusive products are too hard to price! How do you price something you can't buy anywhere else? I know I got my money's worth and I admit, I adore this box. So, don't judge me that I, for the time being, canceled. I had to cut back a total of $70 and this $40 box took the hit!... I have a feeling when they announce the next Volume, I will hit that "Purchase subscription" button! It's just so good and fun and perfect for me! I know I'll re-subscribe in the future (when I have money!) but for now I take a pause. AGAIN, I love this sub and if I wasn't actually making myself a budget for the next few months this would not have stopped. Thanks Powell's- I swear, I'll see you again soon!

  1. Elephant's is such a good deli. A little pricey but good food. We just found a new one near work.
