Volume 39 IndieSpensable Review
I actually got my latest IndieSpensable shipment awhile ago but I waited to do all the May specific stuff first. Since I've waited I've gotten to read a lot of this box already aka actually get a good idea of "Volume 39" and it is awesome! Check out one of the most unique subscription boxes out there!IndieSpensable:
Type: Print/Indie Box
Cost: $39.95/shipment includes shipping (add $12 if outside the US)
What is it?: From website: "Powell's subscription club delivers the best new books, with special attention to independent publishers. Signed first editions. Inventive, original sets. Exclusive printings.... Every six weeks, another installment to read and admire." Not only do you get a first edition of a great book that is signed but other surprises and gifts are included as well as interviews and Q&As with the author. Past books include Freedom, The Marriage Plot, and The Night Circus. Volume 38 Review
I was sooo excited to see my box! IndieSpensable ships every 6 weeks so I don't pay attention to the shipping notices very much. I knew what the book was but everything else was (and always is) a surprise!
Loads of packing material this time... weird.
No worries though, I was psyched!
First look at my goodies!
A Constellation of Vital Phenomena, Signed First Edition, in an exclusive slipcase: Woah, long explanation. But yep, a SIGNED first edition of the novel in an IndieSpensable exclusive hard slipcase. Love. I've seen this book everywhere, being praised of course! I was so excited for this to be the feature of this IndieSpensable shipment. Score. I just started it a few days ago but it's already very good. I love the mixed timeline throughout the book. I ended up really liking last shipment's book so I have high hopes for this book too! This is Anthony Marra's debut novel which is about an orphaned Chechnyan girl hiding from the Russians in their most recent wartime and the people in her life.
Price: $26 ( plus ~$5 for hardcase)
Collectible Booklet: I LOVE this part of IndieSpensable. They do info about the box, facts about the author, and then an exclusive Q & A with the author about the book. I read the last shipment's booklet after I read the book and it was fascinating.I think I might read this one now (mid-read?) instead of waiting until I finish the book. I love the interesting facts and the info helps you understand the book better- I'm a nerd though and I totally love this stuff. Price: ~$3
The Panopticon- Advance Edition- Uncorrected Proof: One of the other included items was a second book. I have never seen an Advance Reader's Edition before but it is craziness to have. The only thing missing is the "About the Author" page which literally says, "biography to come." The edge of the book says it will be released in July. I beat the whole world in reading this! I finished another book while I was traveling to NY and this one happened to be in my carry-on and I have already finished it! I immediately thought the prose was akin to A Clockwork Orange and the subject matter reminded me of Trainspotting (although I mean the movie since I haven't actually read the book) and low and behold one of the quotes on the back is from the author of Trainspotting, am I spot on or what? The book was quite good but VERY adult so if you don't want a gritty novel this may not be for you. Again, an uncorrected advanced version, how cool!?? Price: $22 (that's the pre-order price)
Limited-Edition Powell's Klean Kanteen: I love bottles and cups like this so I am all for displaying my love of books in this nearly indestructible "glass." The booklet says, "never read thirsty again," hahaha. Anyway, I've never been to Powell's, but it is Legendary and I do love their IndieSpensable subscription.
Price: $10
Verdict: Alright, I love this sub, what more can I say? I love reading and books in general and I love a sub that introduces me to new and amazing original reads with some extra info AND goodies as well! Duh, I'm keeping this awesome sub and I'm already excited about the next box since it's a book I've heard good things about too. This box ended up being valued around $66 although I low-balled a couple estimations so it is probably a bit more, but still not bad for a $40 sub! Again, I read a book from this sub that hasn't even been released yet! Too cool- I love it. Check out IndieSpensable if you are a book lover too!
This looks amazing! I rarely read print books anymore but I might give my e-reader a rest for this! I will definitely check it out.
